When researching ideas for my music video it is good to look at videos that are already out there to get an idea of what is suitable for different genres, and so I have analysed four different types of music video.
Britney Spears' single "...Baby One More Time" - (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKo4fFVymqk) is one of the most iconic music videos of all time. Created for the pop genre that would appeal to young girls in their early teens, a young Britney Spears is day dreaming in class of herself and background dancers dancing around different parts of school in school uniforms and sports wear. This appeals to the audience as school is seen as boring and they can relate to the artist in the video. The lyrics to the song do not relate to the video directly, however they are about relationship and love which would also appeal to the young teenage girl.
The music video for Eminem's recent rap song release "Love The Way You Lie" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uelHwf8o7_U) targets an older audience as the lyrics are explicit and the video follows a storyline which features the difficult subject of domestic violence which creates a tense tone to the video. The video follows a clear narrative and the lyrics match what is happening in the video, for example the two characters in the video mouth the words to the rap at the same time they are said by Eminem. To appeal to the older audience they have cast well known actors Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox.
A simple yet effective method was used in the Beyonce song "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyHVQT8aIBM). The black and white video consists of three women - including Beyonce - dancing to a heavily choreographed dance sequence. This is to make the main focus of the video on the dancing (which encorporates the lyrics into some of the moves - including the wedding ring finger gesture) and singing without distracting the attention of the viewers. The lyrics are aimed at women and therefore the target audience would be women who are in their late teens and older as the lyrics are about marriage and relationships.
The music video for "Weapon Of Choice" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF5cBoAV5Ys) by Fatboy Slim, also kept it simple. It features movie actor Christopher Walken who is the main feature of the video, who dances eratically and unexpectedly around a hotel. The video has nothing to do with the lyrics and is generally random. It would appeal to an older audience aged 18 and older as it's simple and mostly would attract fans of the actor and Fatboy Slim.
